This page features loose custom figures that were done in the style
of the Extra Powers collection, but without cards for clients who wanted
to display the figures out of packages.

JLA This is just a group shot of the figures I had already done on cards. Note the tiny Atom on a John Stewart who had not had his costume corrected yet. Also - the Animal Man with no jacket.

JSA02 I never really liked these characters, but they were fun to make. I remember being happy with the old Atom character. The 2-sided cape colors of Alan Scott's Green Lantern was a challenge at the time. One of the things I never thought I did well at all was capes. I've changed that whole technique now, but all these older efforts suffered from bad-looking-cape syndrome.

Ladies Just another grouped shot of figures that had already been done carded. I think I did these to put on the backs of the cards. The only interesting thing here is that it is late enough in 1992 that I've used a Kenner BTAS Catwoman to turn into the purple and green Catwoman. That was lazy! I hated that base figure, but I was getting fed up with nothing but Wonder Woman.

The Supermen Yet another bad publicity stunt by DC in the 80's and 90's was to kill off characters (only to be brought back later, of course) to boost book sales. Not being a Superman fan, I was unmoved by the dramatic "Death of Superman" series but I had a client who wanted the four different Supermen done as action figures. Remember this was 1992. Loooong before they came out by DCD and even well before the MOS Superboy. I thought Eradicator and Cyborg Supes came out well, but Steel was odd and who's that starring as Superboy...YES! It's Will Scarlet! |

Teen Titans 01 During that photo shoot for the backs, I must have posed these four together instead of including Robin up there. This is the better head of the Aqualad, again - some Italian Kenner soccer player whose name escapes me. I had done Speedy with both variants of the Kevin Costner Robin Hood face, but this one that had the grinny face worked best.

Titans 01 Man I wish I had better photos of this set because I am NOT remaking these ones for Extra Powers 2005! I had a client who wanted the entire George Perez Titans lineup from this time period. I delivered them in two main groups. Here is the second Nightwing. Hard to see - but I sculpted a yellow plastic cape with cut in 'feathers' and it looked really good. Terra features color molded hair, Panthar (or whatever) is from a BTAS Catwoman. This Titans commission actually featured some of my best work at the time. I came up with new techniques for many of these figures. Deathstroke was an obvious Deadpool choice, even though not a Kenner base.

Titans 02 Here's the rest of the set. Again posed with the older Nightwing for no good reason. Troy, Jericho, Starfire and Changeling all have tons of sculpted color molded plastic parts. Jericho was the best of this lot, I think.

Villains These guys just happened to be there the day of the shoot. They're not grouped for any special new bad guy team-up. I got grief from people for using the larger base figure for Etrigan - but based on his mini-series of the day - he was a bigger, bulkier ...DEMON. I thought this really gave him some Kirby-ness too. Black Manta was a commission and also did not use a SP base figure.

Alfred I think of this as my "Clark Kent" figure. I did put it on the back of the cards but never had a carded version of it. I really liked how this figure came out and he is holding a silver tea set. How much more Alfreddy can you get? Made from a SP Joker and a TB Kane head with a sculpted bowtie. I am bound to card him up for EP2005.

Supergirl and Krypto I had to have a Krypto in this scale! He's one of my favorites. This is a small Marx playset doll with a color molded collar, resculpted tail and a Superman cape. I will be carding him up for EP2005. |
