9" Dolls

As a Mego fan and collector since the first day they ever came out, (do the math) I loved Hasbro's homage to the 1:9 scale clothed dolls. I am drawn to this scale figure the most. So much so that when I heard the line was dropped, I immediately decided to make this Flash even though I had only worked in resin and plastic before. Lots of people had converted the Famous Covers Daredevil into Flash but I am not much of a FC fan. They just looked way too over the top with those big hokey boots and the worst face sculpts ever. I still don't sew and am STILL always looking for people to do bodysuits (email me!) but have managed to get around that by buying or scavenging what I need (The true customizer's modus) from other sources. This flash was a disassembled Green Lantern so that the suit sleeves and legs could disappear under the boots like the rest of the line. The head is an airbrushed resin casting of a modified Aquaman head that got dipped in red plasti-dip. The suit was bought from another customizer. The gloves and boots were from GL and were dipped in yellow plasti-dip. The logo was made at a sign shop in vinyl by Tom Nagy. I cut the belt out of a yellow plastic Nestle's Quik container. The lightning bolts on the gloves are yellow 3M sign vinyl.

The next one I kicked out was this old-school Supergirl. I really have no use for modern versions of most of the superhero costumes. I am a Silver and Golden age guy. Someone had made me this suit for a 12" doll after the design of the Ideal Superqueen. But it was too small and works better in 1:9. The doll is a Classic LIS Judy Robinson. The belt and cape are from the 9" Superman. Belt loops were cut out of extra suit material. The emblem is due to be redone with the new iron-on technique. The boots are sculpy flex, coated in red plastidip. |

I decided to to the 5 classic Teen Titans set in the Filmation look. I really like the original Mego head sculpts so I got the Dr. Mego heads and decided they would work on the newer, smaller 8" bodies and that those would complement the larger 9" dolls really well. The hands are Dr. mego in well, cast in blue plastic. then hand and glove top are dipped in blue plasti-dip. The shorts are blue Dr. Mego. The boots are sculpeyed over the feet and then dipped in blue PD as well. The stripes are vinyl tape. The belt is a container lid strip and the "A" is foam. |

Here you can see how the smaller
8" body works well as a "sidekick" size for the larger 9" dolls.
I never liked how Hasbro did this Aquaman 'shirt' but have not
had time or gumption to redo it yet.
In this scale I am much more forgiving of things looking more like "toys" than scale models. That's what 1:6 and resin is for. These are fun and I wanted them to conjure thoughts of The Superfriends, The Superman-Aquaman Adventure Hour and Alex Toth drawings a bit more than Alex Ross paintings! |

Obviously - if you are doing the JLA you need a Hawkman! The challenges here were many. I saw many customizers use some pretty bad looking wings on otherwise great looking Hawkmans before I finally found the wings I wanted to use. These are from the Freedom the American Eagle figure by Mezco. The body is Superman's. The belt and cross-straps were hand cut from Nestle's containers. The tights are from the Vision FC and the boots were once again Sculpey over the existing boots. the yellow claw designs on the boots are yellow plastic lacing material cut to points. The mace is from the DCD 2-pack. The head is a resin casting from a friend in England. The logo is hand-painted onto a vinyl disc. |

Shown here is my 9in JLA set. Along with Hasbro's and my customs can be seen a Jonathan Moore Robin and Batgirl, both of which will be replaced soon by my own versions of those characters. Up next soon are the rest of the Titans, a more silver age redo of the Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel, Mary Marvel. Cap. Jr., Batgirl, maybe Hawkgirl... |

Jonathan Moore makes some of the nicest clothed dolls I've ever seen. I bought a Batgirl and Robin from him a couple years ago that are tremendous. (This photo shows another of his Batgirls. Mine has the correct belt and boots.) |

I have long wanted to do a set of accurate looking 1966 Batman TV Series figures in the 9" scale. I purchased a Batman and Batgirl TV style from Jonathan Moore and they are very nice. His clothing is the best! The Batman is a fantastic job and I'm almost tempted to keep it just for the suit. But as his colors are not Adam West style, nor is his face - he may be up for sale shortly. I put this set off for a while until a few years back when I acquired a master fiberglass 1:8 scale Batmobile model from England. (Since then I have acquired the molds for this car and am producing a small run of them as kits in the Summer of 2005) Having the car in the right scale looking so good is prompting me to finish this set up and finish the car! I am opening the car's doors, trunk, hood up and planning to light the whole thing.

The Batgirl has so much right with her that I am just going to re-do the boots and belt to make them perfect and then keep her. The boots are just a thin vinyl cuff painted to match the feet. I want to sculpt actual tops for them. And the belt is pretty inaccurate. the belt is gold like it should be but the pouches should be yellow and the bat buckle is way off. |

The first figure I made to go along with my Moore customs is this Frank Gorshin Riddler. Playmates had released a 9" Bele figure from Star Trek which was played by Gorshin so using this head was a no-brainer. The suit is Bele's as well, dyed green. The belt is satin covered plastic. The mask is satin. The slippers were cut from plastic shoes. The gloves are dipped in custom dyed plasti-dip. The many question marks are sign vinyl made by Tom Nagy. |

The next one up was Julie Newmar as Catwoman. While Lee Merriwether was a better actress and immortalized the role in the movie version, I thought Julie was hotter! Her mask, belt and necklace here are place-markers. The sparkly black suit and gloves were made by Brian Leitner and her head and body is a Playmates Star Trek Marlena Moreau. Her feet up to the ankles were transplanted from a FC 9in female with black boots. |

Coming up next, as I
mentioned will be the Adam West and Burt Ward of my
own designs, I don't know if I'll bother with the Joker or
Penguin as I am not a villain collector at all. I like the
Catwoman and Riddler a little, and their colors will
dress up the display nicely. Bookmark this page and check back for
updates. -S |
